Each message starts with the Farsi word for "attention" followed by what is assumed to be some header information as two 5-digit groups. Then there is a set of 181 five-digit groups. Each message is padded out to take 20 minutes, and there are six messages in each transmission.

Direction finding has traced the signal to a US base near Stuttgart, Germany. In addition to using Farsi, Iran has repeatedly attempted to jam the signal, causing V32 to change frequencies a few times. There's also a more recent, so far unidentified, jammer trying to block the signal.
In addition to direction finding, there is a surprising amount of information you can glean from the audio. The first few days of broadcasts had specific beeps in the background, which appear to be warning tones from a specific type of American military transmitter that warns the operator when encryption is not engaged. At first, a human read the numbers. Eventually, the station switched to using automated numbers. In addition, there have been a few times when Windows 10 system sounds have leaked into the transmission.

"The U.S. Strategic Oil Reserve is a series of vast, subterranean salt caverns in four different sites in Louisiana and Texas. Many are enormous -- the average cavern holds about 10mn barrels [...] This network of tunnels, grottos, pumps and wells can in total hold about 715mn barrels of oil, or enough to supply the entire U.S. with all the oil it needs for over a month" -- but those salt caverns were only designed to be drained and refilled five times.
The Financial Times calculates that we are already at the cavern's ninth historic drawdown, suggesting that "catastrophic structural damage," including dissolution of the salt caverns, is now a viable risk. This could mean, among other things, that the reserves can no longer be drained in their entirety, as "a minimum level of oil... must be kept in the salt caverns" to avoid this fate, with the result that the reserves' effectiveness in a time of future national emergency will be reduced.
Of course, this could also mean that someday the caverns will simply collapse.

FEMA's Gregg Phillips says he has experienced multiple "scary" episodes of sudden teleportation:

Phillips spoke "on multiple podcasts" about being teleported against his will, which he has described as "evil." As director of the Office of Response and Recovery, Phillips oversees billions in funds, and is deeply involved in rapid response efforts in the aftermath of disasters.

Now, do not mistake Phillips description for something like a medical episode or a black out of some form. He insisted that he was traveling from location to location without experiencing the passage of time. When his friends asked him where he was, he replied that he was at the "'Waffle House in Rome, Georgia.' And they said, 'That's not possible, you just left here a moment ago.' But it was possible. It was real."
Phillips also claimed that he had once felt his car "lifted up" and teleported forty miles to a ditch near a church. [...]
At FEMA, Phillips, who lacks any sort of professional experience related to disaster response, has been successful in the sense that his lack of qualifications fall in line with the Trump administration's apparent goal of kneecaping the agency.

Someone who is not me should formulate a maximally-malicious JSON file. I made one with a nesting depth of ~182 million, but "jq" gives up early, at only around depth 3,000. So one trick would be to find the right balance of nesting and array length that stays under typical parsers' limits as long as possible, while requiring as much RAM as possible to get there.

Update: Ok fine, since you have all failed me, I wrote a JSON bomb generator. With a 10GB file, "jq" 1.8.1 takes a full minute to produce no output.

I declare that today, Nov. 19, 2025 is the 50th anniversary of BitBLT, a routine so fundamental to computer graphics that we don't even think about it having an origin. A working (later optimized) implementation was devised on the Xerox Alto by members of the Smalltalk team. It made it easy to arbitrarily copy and move arbitrary rectangles of bits in a graphical bitmap. It was this routine that made Smalltalk's graphical interface possible. Below is part of a PARC-internal memo detailing it.
BitBLT was implemented in microcode on the Alto and exposed to the end-user as just another assembly language instruction, alongside your regular old Nova instructions -- this is how foundational it was. And since it was an integral part of the Alto, it enabled all sorts of interesting experimentation with graphics: user interfaces and human/computer interaction, font rasterization, laser printing... maybe a game or three...

Nine months ago I added an infinite-nonsense honeypot to poison LLM scrapers.

Today, it comprises 69% of my total URLs served. (Nice.)

Normally it feeds junk after a few seconds delay, but in "high-load mode" it bans IPs for 30 days instead. High-load mode is entered when the free-worker count is low, and ends when it has been calm for 15 minutes.

This month it has been in high-load mode 50% of the time: 15 out of 30 days of traffic.

Anthropic destroyed millions of print books to build its AI models:

Ultimately, Judge William Alsup ruled that this destructive scanning operation qualified as fair use -- but only because Anthropic had legally purchased the books first, destroyed each print copy after scanning, and kept the digital files internally rather than distributing them. [...]
The company spent "many millions of dollars" on this buying and scanning operation, often purchasing used books in bulk. Next, they stripped books from bindings, cut pages to workable dimensions, scanned them as stacks of pages into PDFs with machine-readable text including covers, then discarded all the paper originals. Archivists long ago established other ways to extract information from paper. For example, The Internet Archive pioneered non-destructive book scanning methods that preserve physical volumes while creating digital copies.

The structure built over the remains of Chernobyl's destroyed unit 4 suffered such extensive damage in a drone strike in February that it may not be possible to restore it:

The New Safe Confinement - the largest moveable land-based structure ever built - was constructed to cover a much larger area including the original shelter. [...] It has two layers of internal and external cladding around the main steel structure - about 12 metres apart - with both breached in the drone incident. The NSC was designed to allow for the eventual dismantling of the ageing makeshift shelter from 1986 and the management and containment of radioactive waste. It is also designed to withstand temperatures ranging from -43°C to +45°C, a class-three tornado, and an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale but, as the meeting heard, it was not designed to withstand missile or drone strikes. These had all had to be put on hold and he outlined the scale of the damage - with the impact site seeing "pass-through damage to an area of 15 square metres"; damage to cladding from the fires that smouldered afterwards in an area of about 200 square metres; technological equipment - including the power supply system, ventilation and control systems - damaged by "drone fragments and blast wave"; the membrane, designed to help ensure the tightness of the shelter to protect the external environment, smouldered and more than 340 holes had to be cut in the shelter to allow firefighters to put out the fires. There was also damage to the steel structures of the arch and crane systems.
The IAEA's Martin Gajdos, Technical Coordinator of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, said that the damage meant the New Safe Confinement "is currently unable to to perform its confinement function".

Jellyfish Sap our Atomic Essence, again

A swarm of jellyfish has caused major disruption at one of France's largest nuclear power plants, for the second time in a month.

The jellyfish entered the filters of the pumping station and the Paluel nuclear plant. The incident reduced output at the plant in Normandy by 2.4 gigawatts and crews are working to restore it to full operation.
In August, generation at another major nuclear site in France was also disrupted by jellyfish, after a "massive and unpredictable" swarm forced the Gravelines plant to temporarily cease operations.
