• When Waymos encounter anything even slightly difficult, they shut down, and wait for a remote operator to log on from a call center in Indonesia.

• During the PG&E blackout, the call center was understaffed for the number of robots that had shut themselves down.

• Rather than having the remote drivers just pull the cars over and park them until they had enough staffing to deal with this shitshow, they just... didn't. Google sat with their thumbs up their asses for six hours instead.

• The solution they are proposing above? Rather than trying to "fail safe" and call in a human Mechanical Turk operator to manually pilot the drone, they're just going to let the robot Leeroy Jenkins it. This is absolutely going to get people killed.

The mayor's executive order "urges" all federal law enforcement to follow Chicago police directives banning them from wearing masks on duty and requiring them to activate their body cameras at all times when interacting with the public. Officers or armed forces should also display their federal agency, last name and badge number or rank "in a clearly visible fashion," per the order. [...]

Besides the directives on law enforcement, Johnson's order directs city departments to coordinate on responding to federal agents or military presence in Chicago and submit regular public records requests to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to obtain information on immigration enforcement. Why am I the only one in the news media who seems a bit concerned that a crypto billionaire is housing the city's new high-tech police surveillance unit in his downtown building?

Mayor Daniel Lurie announced in June that Chris Larsen has donated $9.4 million to allow the Real Time Investigation Center to operate in Ripple Labs San Francisco headquarters. [...] The RTIC is also funded by Larsen's San Francisco Police Community Fund and billionaire Michael Mortiz's Crankstart Foundation.

In other words: The high-tech unit of SFPD is funded almost entirely by two tech billionaires, and the surveillance systems it operates will be housed in one of those billionaires' offices.

This is another big step in the privatization of San Francisco policing and the overall move by Lurie to rely on voluntary gifts from the very rich instead of taxes and democratic budgeting by elected officials to fund services in San Francisco.
