My best friend in middle school did this. Being done with pencil and paper, the database was much much much smaller. And many of the samples were canine.

Your "... used to be ..." covers a lot of ills. Germans have been using flat toilets (flachspüler) with a nice ceramic ledge for the poop for well over 100 years along with the (standard for Americans) deep toilet. They're still making them and there's an active debate over which is better.

As someone who prefers not to get stunk out every time I use a toilet, I'm team deep. That said, those few times I've needed a stool sample and had to do the plastic wrap thing, I wonder if I should have had one stuffed off in a back WC for times like that.

Once again glad that digital smell has never made it big.

poop is information-rich, you know. There used to be toilets with a platform halfway for poop to collect so a doctor could inspect it. Smell plays a huge role in diagnoses, though.
