The first season of Psycho-Pass is an all-timer, half Shocking Crime Show and half failed-utopia speculative fiction with really good character work.

Thank you for the reviews! I have to mention my admiration for Sherlock Hound, the 1984-85 animated series. Miyazaki directed some of the episodes and got the show going. Thus the animation is beautiful and it's full of delightful trains, airships, submarines etc. Also, everyone's a dog.

Ludwig was fun although it did fall off a bit after the first 3 episodes, once the writers appeared to run out of types of puzzles.

However I'll watch anything with Anna Maxwell Martin in it.

And then there's the 1982 TV version of Hound of the Baskervilles with post-Doctor Who Tom Baker of all people as Holmes. It's not great, but if you enjoyed out-of-order late 1970s Dr Who episodes on PBS, it may be worth a casual watch just from curiosity.

He admitted that away from the production, he sort of became Sherlock Holmes in his personal life after engrossing himself in the Doyle lore. He always tried to stay true to the material during filming. As you said NomadUK, he was a consummate professional!

Have you checked out Psycho-Pass? It is Production IG's attempt to cater to the same audience as GITS but in a different setting.

Ludwig isn't in the previouslies. I think I watched it after (UK edition) Guardian said it was some of the best of 2025's TV.

Definitely between Rathbone and Brett for god-tier Holmes.  Everything else is a pale imitation (but I do have a soft spot for Elementary.)

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die was so much fun but couldn’t stick the landing. Bummer because it was so enjoyable up to that point.

That's fair but Poker Face was very specifically a Columbo.

I always think of all weirdo detective shows as Sherlocks. Poker Face was a sherlock. David Mitchell's Ludwig is a sherlock. I enjoyed those two.

Seconded! I watched all the Jeremy Brett Holmes on KQED as a kid and that got imprinted on me as The Holmes. I tried rewatching an episode recently and still great.

re: greenland, i struggle to admit to such tropey motivation but one of the various things that keeps me coming back here is the occasional small crack in the (admittedly appealing) grouchy mister wilson vibe and the possible wholesome gleam of a view of human nature not fully devoid of hope. :D

Note: not a recommendation, unless you need something to kill an hour while in an altered state. I watched it ~30 years ago and recall it hadn't aged well then, so...

The GitS obsession with immigration is tied to the setting. War and disasters resulted in collapses in many formerly-first world countries, with resulting immigration. Plus, well, real-life Japan perennially blames foreigners for crime and social unrest even though we make up less than 3% of the population. The current prime minister is a far-right nutbag who wants to get Article 9 out so that Japan can have an active military again. I think it’s aged too well, actually.

All I can say about Jason Statham is that I hope I never learn that the actor is a shithead, because the characters he plays are almost always just the stupid thing I need here to take no further shit at just the moment when I have run out of patience for any further shit.

If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan, then you need to check out the Granada "Sherlock Holmes" ITV series from the 80's.  Jeremy Brett is the gold standard for on screen portrayals of Sherlock Holmes.  The first two seasons are brilliant.  Seasons 3 and 4 are OK.  The 5 feature length special episodes are not as good as the regular 1 hour episodes.

No Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)? Oddly enough, it's kindof a prototype for the 2009 Guy Ritchie film — more plot overlap than you'd expect.

We tried getting into Watson (2025), but were actively hurling insults at the TV by the end of the first episode. It's like someone ran House through an LLM trained only on scripts for the CW.

I went to the "Ghost in The Shell" exhibition this week, it's amazing. Sure, we've seen sketches which turned into the scenes of an Anime.. but if you watched the scenes many times and know them by heart, it's really great.

And the Musgrave Ritual episode gave me nightmares as a kid.

My childhood was filled with the black-and-white '40s joy of Basil Rathbone. Especially later on when they gave up on trying to adapt the original Conan Doyle and started to free-style.

I'm a fan oh Guy Ritchie's early movies style (yes I like Revolver), but have just watched the first Downey movie. It was kinda fun, but I don't know, it was missing something. Didn't watch the second yet, but the new series also didn't catch my attention.

Zounds! Well, avail yourself of the opportunity at some point. The final series wasn't quite up to the previous ones, but that was because (a) Conan Doyle was slacking by that point and (b) Brett was slowly dying — but he was such a fucking professional that he ploughed through regardless, still doing a better job than anyone before or since.
