They get more money and an excuse to point their fingers and say "see? there's too much crime, we need more cameras!".

Not at all.  But I am convinced that cities who want traffic enforcement cameras that are ineffective for surveillance will find what they need.  The root problem seems to be outsourcing operations to a for-profit company that then extracts maximum value from the data stream.

it's the gestapo use cases i object to. Like flagging everyone who drove to a protest site for instance. Or tracking down an immigrants location based on their license plate to arrest him. Car surveillance via license plate is one of the biggest tools of all the three letter agencies.

Turns out it is easy to design a speed/red light camera that only records cars that are violating the law.   Sure, that small subset of cars can be used for surveillance.   But it is nowhere as large as the wide, indiscriminate range of law abiding cars that Flock cameras record.

Speed cameras have little to do with enforcing traffic law and a lot to do with farming revenue for the city and the camera operator.

There's an easy way not to waste the money on reinstallin these. It's to not waste the money by not reinstalling them.

Of course I do.  I also think that it's completely reasonable to keep track of people who drive cars.  Sorry about that: although it may be surprising to Americans, cars are not a human right.

Trouble is, you'd get caught on camera replacing the camera with the injector.
You could just feed it episodes of the Muppets Show for all it matters, mind. It'd take months for the one guy to come and replace it.

In a pinch, one could just spray paint the lens with aerosol glue to render it pretty useless.
